Sell-side agentic commerce is the agent infrastructure that runs a retailer's or marketplace's catalogue, inventory, pricing, orders and supplier work without waiting for a human instruction at each step. Most of the agentic commerce conversation sits on the buyer's side: checkout inside ChatGPT, Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), Meta's Muse agent launched in September 2026. The definition [London marketplace infrastructure provider Esetrix published in April 2026](https://www.esetrix.com/news-and-blogs/what-is-agentic-commerce) looks at the other side of the counter: the infrastructure itself acts, routing orders, enriching the catalogue, governing suppliers and resolving exceptions.

September 2026 showed that this side is moving just as fast. Amazon gave Seller Assistant persistent memory and workflows that keep running after the seller logs off. Türkiye-based marketplace Trendyol described "Ortak", an agent that works as a digital assistant for its sellers. Commerce (BigCommerce and Feedonomics) launched catalogue enrichment for agentic surfaces. Our position at Webtures is simple: *the buying agent asks at machine speed; if the side answering it runs at human speed, you drop off the agent's shortlist*. This article covers what sell-side agent infrastructure is, where it meets the buying agent, who shipped what in 2026 and how to build it.

## What is sell-side agentic commerce?

![Automation follows rules, agents read context: orders waiting during a carrier outage versus rerouted orders; five tasks handed to agents](https://www.webtures.com/images/insights/sell-side-agentic-commerce/section-1.svg?v=si1)![Automation follows rules, agents read context: orders waiting during a carrier outage versus rerouted orders; five tasks handed to agents](https://www.webtures.com/images/insights/sell-side-agentic-commerce/section-1-light.svg?v=si1)

Sell-side agentic commerce means handing the decision and execution steps of commerce operations to agents that weigh context. Esetrix draws the line clearly: automation follows a rule (if X, then Y), while agentic infrastructure reads the situation and decides. When a carrier goes offline, a rule-based system holds the orders until somebody notices. An agent reroutes the affected orders to another carrier, tells the buyer and the supplier, and logs the incident against the supplier's performance score.

The work being handed to agents falls into five areas:

- **Catalogue:** filling missing attributes, normalising titles and descriptions, producing the structured fields buying agents read.

- **Inventory and pricing:** syncing stock across channels in real time, watching competitor prices, updating prices inside defined limits.

- **Orders and exceptions:** routing each order to the right warehouse or supplier, catching a delay before the customer complains.

- **Returns and disputes:** classifying requests and closing returns that meet policy without waiting for a person.

- **Seller and supplier management:** validating and onboarding new sellers, scoring their performance continuously.

Esetrix argues that this changes the unit economics of running a marketplace: in its own words, a team of five on agentic infrastructure can manage what would take twenty people on a traditional platform. That is a vendor claim, so test it against your own numbers before it shapes a budget. What does hold is the shift in the team's job, from managing workflows to managing parameters, limits and outcomes.

## Where does the buying agent meet the selling side?

![The buying agent touches the seller in four places: catalogue, live stock and price, checkout, post-purchase events; created, confirmed, shipped, fulfilled](https://www.webtures.com/images/insights/sell-side-agentic-commerce/section-2.svg?v=si1)![The buying agent touches the seller in four places: catalogue, live stock and price, checkout, post-purchase events; created, confirmed, shipped, fulfilled](https://www.webtures.com/images/insights/sell-side-agentic-commerce/section-2-light.svg?v=si1)

The buying agent touches the selling side at four points, and at every one of them the merchant's systems supply the answer.

1. **Catalogue:** the agent reads products from a feed or straight from the merchant through UCP's Catalog capability. A missing attribute becomes an empty cell in the agent's comparison.

2. **Live stock and price:** the agent checks at the moment of recommendation. Stock fed by a daily file keeps showing an item as available until the next morning, hours after it sold out.

3. **Checkout:** an ACP or UCP checkout session writes the order into the merchant's system.

4. **After the purchase:** [OpenAI's checkout specification](https://developers.openai.com/commerce/specs/checkout) asks the merchant to send `order_created` and `order_updated` events as the order changes, with the statuses `created`, `manual_review`, `confirmed`, `canceled`, `shipped` and `fulfilled`. [UCP's Order capability](https://ucp.dev/) carries status updates, shipment tracking and returns over real-time webhooks too.

The fourth point is why sell-side agents are becoming a requirement rather than a nice extra. In the specification's own words, these events keep the buyer's view in sync with the merchant's fulfilment. If a person approves orders from a spreadsheet, tracking numbers are uploaded in an evening batch or returns run over email, the buying agent tells its user something stale. The user complains to the merchant, and in the next round the agent ranks somebody else first. We cover the protocols in detail in our [agentic commerce protocol map](https://www.webtures.com/insights/agentic-commerce-protocols-how-mcp-a2a-acp-ucp-and-ap2-work-together/) and the stock side in [one inventory truth](https://www.webtures.com/insights/one-inventory-truth-for-agentic-commerce/).

Over the last fifteen months most of the large platforms put an agent on the merchant's side of the counter. What the announcements share is that the agent no longer just writes a suggestion; it does the work.

| Date | Platform | What it does for the seller |
| --- | --- | --- |
| July 2025 | Walmart, Marty | One agent for suppliers, sellers and advertisers: onboarding, orders and campaigns in a single place. |
| March 2026 | Shopify, Agentic Storefronts | On by default for eligible stores; products flow through Shopify Catalog to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini. ChatGPT requires the store to sell to US customers. |
| April 2026 | Mirakl, Agentic Activation | Enrichment that restructures the catalogue for language models, plus a channel layer that connects merchants first to Microsoft Copilot. |
| September 2026 | Amazon, Seller Assistant | Remembers each seller's pricing patterns, inventory cycles and goals; runs pricing and restocking workflows while the seller is logged off and records every action in an audit trail. |
| September 2026 | Trendyol, Ortak | An agent serving sellers as a digital assistant; Trendyol's own language model writes product descriptions in more than ten languages. |
| 29 September 2026 | Commerce, Feedonomics Enrichment | Generates titles, descriptions, feature bullets, FAQs and structured fields, ready for surfaces such as Gemini, ChatGPT and Copilot. |

The measurement Mirakl published with its launch sums up the urgency: 427 product pages across 35 countries averaged 48 out of 100, against the 61 points the company treats as competitive for agent visibility. The figure rests on the vendor's own methodology, so read it as a direction rather than a precise measure. The direction is plain enough: most catalogues are not ready for agents, and the tools closing that gap are sell-side agents themselves.

## How do you build sell-side agent infrastructure?

![Permission ladder: observe and alert, recommend, act with approval, autonomous within limits; every action audited](https://www.webtures.com/images/insights/sell-side-agentic-commerce/section-3.svg?v=si1)![Permission ladder: observe and alert, recommend, act with approval, autonomous within limits; every action audited](https://www.webtures.com/images/insights/sell-side-agentic-commerce/section-3-light.svg?v=si1)

You do not need to replace your commerce platform. Esetrix also points to the two areas with the most friction, catalogue quality and order exceptions, as the place to start. The sequence we recommend has six steps:

1. **Establish one source of truth.** Product, stock and price come from one place, and the site, the feed, the marketplaces and the API all say the same number. An agent makes fast decisions on wrong data as well.

2. **Enrich the catalogue the way agents read it.** Attributes, compatibility, dimensions, use cases and FAQs live in structured fields. Have a person review a sample of whatever the enrichment agent writes.

3. **Move order events to machine speed.** Map your own order statuses to the ACP and UCP statuses, and turn carrier updates into events within minutes rather than hours.

4. **Put the first agent on exceptions.** Classify late shipments, stock shortfalls and bad addresses, and let the agent detect them and propose a fix before anything else.

5. **Write down the permission ladder.** For each task, decide where the agent may observe and alert, where it may recommend, where it may act with approval and where it may act alone within limits. Amazon's model is a sensible starting point: the seller chooses whether the agent only surfaces recommendations or takes action, actions are reviewed and approved by the seller, and everything lands in an audit trail.

6. **Measure the outcome.** Track agent-originated orders, exception resolution time, feed error rate, returns and cancellations every month, and review a sample of the agent's decisions after the fact.

## What are the risks on the selling side?

- **A pricing agent without a floor:** two agents reacting to each other's prices can drive both to the bottom. Keep the floor price, margin and daily change limit outside the agent, in a fixed rule.

- **Account health:** when an agent edits listings, prices and promotions on a marketplace, its mistakes count against the seller's metrics. Anything that could breach a policy should not run without approval.

- **Which buying agents to let in:** Meta launched Muse on 8 September 2026, and Amazon [began blocking it from 20 September](https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/28/tech/meta-muse-ai-agents-amazon), saying the agent accessed its store without authorisation and did not identify itself as an agent. Deciding which agents you admit is now a policy question; we cover verification in [fraud and authorisation in agent transactions](https://www.webtures.com/insights/fraud-and-authorisation-in-agent-transactions/).

- **Data boundaries:** plugins that connect seller data to an outside assistant save time, and they also change where that data travels. Where customer personal data is involved, settle GDPR and local privacy obligations in the contract and in access rights.

- **Unverified efficiency claims:** the return-rate and headcount figures vendors publish come from their own customers. Do not decide on them before your own pilot has a before-and-after measurement.

We treat agentic commerce as a two-sided system. For a buying agent to find and choose you, it needs product data, protocol support and visibility; for its user to stay satisfied afterwards, stock, orders and returns have to answer at machine speed. Our work starts by auditing the four touchpoints where the two sides meet, measuring which layer breaks, and then choosing with the brand's team the exception area where the first agent goes.

You can see what your catalogue, stock and order data tell buying agents with an [Agentic Commerce Readiness](https://www.webtures.com/agentic-commerce-readiness/) scan, and build sell-side agent workflows and their measurement with our [Agent Experience](https://www.webtures.com/agent-experience/) team.
