Mobile usage grows every year, and every new app makes the stores more competitive. To reach more users, improve discoverability and increase downloads, apps need optimisation work built specifically for the stores. That work is called App Store Optimization (ASO).

ASO is the whole set of activities that make a mobile app more visible in store search, category pages, recommendation surfaces and similar discovery areas.

Resources on the subject are mostly written for large markets, and specialist teams are still scarce in many regions. As app counts climb and competition tightens, ASO has moved from optional to necessary for any brand that depends on mobile.

What is ASO?

ASO, or App Store Optimization, is the name for every optimisation that makes an app more visible in stores such as Google Play and the Apple App Store, helps users find the right app more easily and increases conversions such as downloads.

Understanding which factors drive in-store visibility requires analysis, and each action follows from that analysis rather than from guesswork.

Users choose between the many apps published every day using a set of visible criteria, and ASO is the discipline of getting those criteria right.

Why is ASO done?

What store algorithms weighWhat store algorithms weigh

ASO is also known as app store marketing, mobile app optimisation or app store search optimisation. It covers the optimisations that increase visibility inside the stores, which in turn lifts impressions, in-store traffic, product page visits and downloads.

The main focus is improving discoverability and conversion performance in the stores users actually use. Downloads are the primary goal, and alongside them ASO serves:

  • brand awareness and visibility,
  • app reviews and ratings,
  • engagement from the existing user base,
  • an additional marketing channel.

ASO and SEO pull different leversASO and SEO pull different levers

Every app in a store is evaluated against metrics and user-driven data. As app counts rise, Google Play and the App Store have become more selective about what they surface, and they weigh a long list of quality criteria.

The answer to "how is ASO done" is mastering a constantly evolving set of optimisations and applying user-focused strategy. App name, description, visuals, reviews, category choice and conversion rate all have to be considered together. The factors that shape in-store visibility are:

  • App name. One of the strongest fields for visibility and the first thing a user sees. It should be memorable, relevant and easy to read. Character limits matter: roughly 50 characters on Google Play and 30 on the App Store.
  • App icon. The icon creates the first impression. Use distinctive colour, prefer a brand symbol over text and keep it recognisable at small sizes.
  • Category choice. Publishing a finance app under games damages visibility, user expectation and ratings at once. The right category is a ranking decision, not an administrative one.
  • Keywords. Keywords drive discovery. Research them with ASO tooling, study the terms competitors rank for and place them without turning the description into spam.
  • App description. This is where you explain what the app does. Phrases that match search intent, real use cases and a clear benefit narrative all affect in-store discoverability, and the text has to stay readable within the character limit.
  • Screenshots and preview video. These carry the download decision on the product page more than any other element.
  • Ratings and reviews. Volume, average score and freshness feed the ranking algorithms directly.
  • Download volume and app speed. Both act as quality signals for the store.

What are the components of ASO?

Localisation is rewriting, not translatingLocalisation is rewriting, not translating

ASO success depends on optimising each element of the store listing separately. Four components affect ranking and download rate directly.

  • Keyword research. Competitor analysis, category trends and the language your audience actually searches with are assessed together. The right keyword set is the foundation of discoverability.
  • App name and title optimisation. The name drives both recognition and ranking, so the brand name and primary keyword have to be composed together.
  • Icon, screenshots and video. These set the first impression. Most users decide to download based on these three elements alone.
  • Description and metadata. This explains what the app does and why it deserves the install. The balance between keyword coverage and readability is struck here.

What are the ASO tools?

Effective ASO runs on the right tooling. We separate tools by three functions:

  • Keyword research tools. They show which queries lead users to the app and where search volume actually sits.
  • Ranking and tracking tools. They follow keyword-level positions and measure the effect of each optimisation.
  • Review and feedback tools. They analyse reviews and ratings, producing improvement signals for both the product and the listing.

Widely used tools include Sensor Tower, data.ai, Mobile Action, AppTweak, ASOdesk and TheTool. Tool choice depends on the target market, app category and budget; a setup where a single tool covers every need is not realistic.

How does ASO differ from SEO?

Both disciplines produce visibility, but their levers differ. In SEO, external links feed rankings. In ASO that role belongs to in-app signals: average rating, review volume, review freshness, post-install retention and uninstall rate. The store algorithm looks at what the user does after downloading. That is why ASO work never stops at the listing page; it covers the first-run experience too.

ASO strategies

  • Localisation and cultural optimisation. Translating the description is not enough. Screenshot copy, examples and keywords are rewritten in the search language of the target market.
  • Social and campaign integration. Traffic arriving from outside the store feeds both in-store conversion rate and ranking signals.
  • Engagement and loyalty. Triggering the review prompt at the right moment lifts the average rating and, with it, the ranking.
  • Regular release notes. An actively developed app produces a stronger signal for store algorithms.

What to watch out for in ASO work

For an app to be downloaded and used, it has to draw attention at first glance. The essentials are a listing image that raises curiosity, a clear and compelling title, a strong description, a coherent web presence around the app and an experience that is easy to use.

ASO work makes the necessary adjustments so the app presents itself as well as possible. Gaps are fixed, visuals and copy support the message, and user experience, review management and product-page conversion are improved on a regular cycle. The better the user experience, the stronger the in-store visibility, user trust and download performance. For AI-assisted discovery surfaces, a clear app name, accurate category information, strong reviews and consistent brand signals also help the app be understood in the right context.

How is the cost of ASO work determined?

Cost varies with the complexity of the app, the number of target markets, category competition and how many languages need localising. A single-market, single-language setup does not carry the same effort as one spread across five countries. A price quoted before the scope is defined usually signals work that will not be measured. We always price against a baseline measurement and a target keyword set.

Webtures ASO consulting scope

We run app store work across four streams: app name and title optimisation, keyword research, visual and video optimisation, and description and metadata optimisation. Each stream is tied to a measurable output, and the monthly report tracks keyword-level rankings, impressions, product page visits and downloads together. For measurement infrastructure on the mobile side we work alongside our web and app analytics service. Results from the brands we work with are in our success stories, and scoping conversations start on the contact page.

Who is ASO not for?

ASO grows demand, it does not create it. For an app without product-market fit, one that loses users in the first week, store optimisation only helps more people leave. If retention is very low or the app is not actively developed, the product conversation has to come first. The return is similarly limited for apps used only inside an organisation, which are never discovered through store search.
